Ball!

It’s common in Girls Lacrosse for the defenders to verbally assault a player with the ball.  In this case, the Northview defender repeatedly screams “BALL!” at the GAC ball carrier:

Northview Has a Very Good Lacrosse Program

Once a year, I seem to photograph the Greater Atlanta Christian Girls Lacrosse teams (both Varsity and Junior Varsity) playing North Fulton County’s Northview High School Titans.  And the outcome is the same – domination of the Lady Spartans by the talented Northview Squad.

First Glimpse of Spring (Part I): Lacrosse

Friday evening I had the opportunity to photograph three of Greater Atlanta Christian School’s spring Varsity teams.  Although these are spring sports, the season for the Georgia High Schools Assosciation starts very early, in late February.  And although we’ve had some warm weather, Friday definitely was not.  Highs Friday were around fifty, but quickly changed as the sun started setting.

The Spartans Lacrosse program seems to be improving this year versus last.  I only shot the first half of the game, but the Spartans lead at half time.

Lacrosse Senior Night

Lacrosse Senior Night turned out to be almost a non-event, as the combined girls and boys teams had one senior.  However, both teams turned out to be dominant against the visiting Gainesville squads (who have a similar level of experience to GAC’s squads).

Lacrosse quickly became a favorite sport to shoot over the past two seasons.  The action is constant, and the sport begs to be shot tight.

DoubleStixx Lacrosse – High Contrast

Shooting early morning sporting events usually means low sun, which creates long shadows. The shadows at most high school level fields are created by tree lines around the stadium or bleachers on one side.

While the shadows and bright sun can create challenging circumstances to get a good exposure, some practice and good timing yields an effect where you can make your subject stand out from his background and surroundings.

A backlit photo is one where the light behind the subject is stronger than the frontal lighting. In this situation, I’ve allowed the background to become slightly overexposed but maintained a correct exposure on the subject.

I also look for patches of light coming across the field. When you expose for the lit area, the rest of the field becomes much darker. While your eye is able to adjust to see both – the camera cannot. Note the shadow of his teammate on the left side of the frame in the foreground.

Natural framing is using an element in the photo to try and focus the viewer’s attention on your subject. This can include another person or objects. I’ve used the out-of-focus defender and his stick to focus the viewer’s attention on the goalie. There’s also an element of a story here – the goalie with the ball preparing to pass to his teammate.
